Modem Set Up

Go to the Control Panel. You can find the Control Panel by clicking the Start button, clicking Settings and then Control Panel. Another way is to double click the My Computer icon on your desktop. Locate the Control Panel folder. Double click on that to open it.

Once in the Control Panel, find the Modems icon and double click on it.

Note: If you do not have a modem configured already, Windows 95 will walk you through the modem setup. Either way we suggest you walk through the rest of this file just to double-check your settings


Click on the Properties button.

Properties


The maximum speed for a 14.4k modem should be set to 19200. For a 28k - 33.6k modem, this should be set to 33600. A 56k modem should be set at 57600.

General


Click on the Connection tab at the top of the window. Data bits should be 8, Parity should be none, Stop bits should be 1. Wait for dial tone before dialing, should be checked. Cancel the call if not connected within XXX sec's. should be checked, and 60 should be in the seconds box. Disconnect a call if idle for more than XXX mins. can be checked. Note: If these options weren't available, don't worry, your modem may not support them.

Connection


Click on Port Settings button on the bottom of the window. Use FIFO buffers, should be checked. Both the receive and transmit buffers should be set to the right on the High side. If you experience problems with the modem, you can lower these. Click the OK button. Note: If these options weren't available, don't worry, your modem may not support them.

Back in the Properties box, click the Advanced button. Use error control, should be checked. Compress Data, should be checked. Use flow control, should be checked. Hardware, should be checked. Modulation type can be set at Standard. If you know of a specific init string for your modem enter it under Extra settings. If you are using a U.S.Robotics 56k modem, put s10=14 there. Click, OK. Click, OK again. Note: If these options weren't available, don't worry, your modem may not support them.

Advanced Connection


Click on Dialing Properties, button. Fill in upper portion of window. If you have call-waiting, make sure that the This location has calling waiting, is checked. To disable it, put *70, in the box. (you may want to check with your local telephone company to see if they require something else). If you don't have call-waiting, you must make sure that This location has call-waiting, is NOT checked. Verify the rest of the settings in the window. If they look correct then click OK.

Dialing Properties


Click on Diagnostics. Highlight the Com Port that your modem is on and click on More Info... (This will check your modem to make sure that it is working correctly) Click OK. Click Close.
